In 1984 after 13 years service as an officer in the Sea Cadet Corps (Lieutenant (SCC) A Caig RNR) and the award of the Cadet Forces Medal, I joined the Royal Military Police, Territorial Army. When there was no room for more officers there I transferred to the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. I attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1986 and I was commissioned into the British Army as Second Lieutenant Caig on 15 June 1986. I was subsequently promoted to Lieutenant and later was appointed Staff Officer Combat Supplies, 2 Ordnance Battalion, Catterick Garrison. I retired from the TA in 1995 and spent 5 years on the Regular Army Reserve of Officers.
